Thanks to its 240-horsepower V6 DOCH engine, performance is impressive for a vehicle that, while lighter than its previous incarnation, still tips the scales at more than 2,200 kilograms. Mercedes-Benz officially clocks the M-Class鈥檚 zero to 60 m.p.h. 7.4 seconds; we come short at 9.5 seconds, yet are blown away by its torque at mid and high speeds 鈥?a handy feature when passing through the mountains. The drive also lets us see if the diesel-powered Bluetec engine sounds like the diesels of old: two clanging spoons. Yet with barely a whisper, the M-Class is as quiet as most anything its size on the road 鈥?helped along by a well-insulated cabin. I鈥檓 awakened by the girls who are acting like it鈥檚 Christmas morning, asking if we could take the new car out today. We drop them off at school (cue the curious looks from fellow moms and dads) and I take advantage of a surprisingly enjoyable rush-hour commute.

At work, it鈥檚 an easy fit in the parking lot, which, at times, can even challenge my Mini Cooper-driving colleagues. In the evening the M-Class handles daycare pickup, dance practice drop-off and carpooling like a champ. It鈥檚 in these crowded parking lots that I appreciate the 360-degree-view camera when backing up. The bird鈥檚-eye view takes some getting used to, but becomes as easy to navigate as the rest of the vehicle鈥檚 features. It鈥檚 off to Waterton Lakes National Park for the weekend, with the family (and the dog). Cargo space again easily handles the load. The trip down Highway 2A allows me to put some of the M-Class鈥?safety features to the test, notably Active Lane-Keeping Assist, Passive Blind Spot Assist and the radar-based Distronic Plus proximity control. The lane-keeping assist notes I鈥檓 gradually leaving the lane by vibrating the steering wheel, followed by a gentle readjustment back into the lane - nothing too intrusive. Distronic Plus, meanwhile, is Mercedes-Benz鈥檚 version of cruise control that adapts on the road as you approach vehicles by applying integrated brake assist. While a bit conservative for my liking, it is easily one of my wife鈥檚 favourite features (along with the massaging passenger seat!). After returning from a sweaty hike on the trails in Waterton, the M颅Class鈥檚 advanced key fob is much appreciated as it rolls down all windows before we reach the vehicle. This is perhaps the saddest day of the journey, as it鈥檚 when I return the ML350. The final tally after five days includes two road trips, numerous daddy duties and barely one tank of gas despite more than 1,000 kilometres added to the odometer.

Mercedes-Benz鈥檚 reputation as one of the world鈥檚 foremost, venerated luxury car brands is so established that it鈥檚 hard to appraise one of its models as anything but exceptional. It鈥檚 easy to understand why. The automaker has proven itself as a brand that buyers keep coming back to. Thus, buyers interested in putting a Mercedes in their driveways might find it hard to take an unbiased look at a carmaker whose vehicles are among the best. Mercedes鈥?ML350 is no exception. Several iterations of the midsize luxury SUV have been on the market for nearly 20 years, giving owners a rare combo of refined class and rugged utility. Is this a contradiction in terms, or does the ML350 truly deliver as a high-end crossover? AxleGeeks examined its price, performance, passenger comforts and more to see if the ML350 is the SUV worth upgrading to a Mercedes. 9,800 more than the average SUV.

Against names like BMW and Infiniti, the ML350 ekes out one mile per gallon more in the city (18 mpg), the highway (24 mpg) and combined (21 mpg). Where the ML350 stretches owners鈥?fuel dollars is in its total range. A full tank can cover 443 city miles and 590 miles of highway driving. That鈥檚 14 percent more than other luxury SUVs and 22 percent more than all crossovers. A Mercedes engine and powertrain will always make use of superior German engineering, and in the ML350, it results in a 3.5-liter V6 engine, sending power to the rear wheels through a 7-speed automatic transmission. With a zero to 60 time of 7.3 seconds, it out-accelerates its German BMW and Porsche contemporaries. The ML350 produces 302 horsepower and 273 ft-lbs of torque. In terms of horsepower, it鈥檚 only average compared to today鈥檚 luxury crossovers, while it鈥檚 torque is lacking by 56 ft-lbs.
