The Audi Q3 and BMW X1 may soon have some competition from Mercedes-Benz. In a release marking the start of Mercedes A-Class production at a plant in Rastatt, Germany, the automaker confirmed that the next vehicle to come from the plant will be a compact SUV. Mercedes hasn't released official information on the new MFA-based SUV, but the compact luxury crossover may wear GLA badging to keep in line with the rumored nomenclature restructuring. For now, the GLA's main competitor would be the Audi Q3, the brand's latest compact SUV powered by a turbo-four. The GLA could also attract buyers away from the BMW X1, which comes to the U.S. Mercedes still hasn't decided if the A-Class will be headed to the U.S., but a compact crossover from the same plant might have a better chance of reaching our shores. The A-Class hatchback, which debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, is the second model to ride on Benz's new front-drive MFA platform. The B-Class commenced production in Rastatt back in September 2011. The automaker has confirmed the arrival of the MFA-based CLA-Class, the coupe-like sedan previewed by the stunning Concept Style Coupe. Expect a 2.0-liter turbocharged gas I-4 as the first powertrain for the U.S.-spec CLA four-door and GLA compact crossover. The crossover, if it ever rolls into U.S. Mercedes SUV buyers who want something efficient and not too pricey, but aren't interested in the upcoming diesel-powered 2013 GLK250, featured in the photo above. The new A-Class and other MFA-based vehicles represent another step in the automaker's "Mercedes-Benz 2020" strategy.
May 1, 2017 鈥?Seat belts and seat belt pretensioners have been listed as the cause of many vehicle recalls and the latest Mercedes-Benz recall adds to the list. The automaker says more than 12,700 vehicles are equipped with seat belt pretensioners that may fail in a crash. Mercedes didn't go into details about what caused the defect other than saying it's the front seat belt pretensioners that are the problem and that replacement front seat belts aren't available. If you own one of the recalled vehicles, watch for a recall notice in May 2017 and then another letter when Mercedes dealers have enough replacement seat belts. Just days ago Mercedes recalled nearly 11,000 SUVs for problems with the steering couplings and the latest recall also involves steering couplings in an additional 168 vehicles. The automaker says the steering coupling connecting bolt may not be tight enough, possibly causing a complete loss of steering. In the other Mercedes steering coupling recall, drivers can also lose the ability to steer the vehicles. But the previous recall was ordered because the steering coupling interlocks can wear down and cause a loss of steering, something dealers must fix by replacing the steering couplings.
Compared to last year鈥檚 X3 xDrive28i, which used a naturally-aspirated six-cylinder engine, that鈥檚 a gain of 2 mpg in the city and 3 mpg on the highway. It also gives BMW bragging rights for the most fuel-efficient luxury crossover, since it now bests the Audi Q5, the Range Rover Evoque and the outgoing Mercedes-Benz GLK in fuel economy. The 2013 X3 xDrive28i will likely beat the new Mercedes-Benz GLK350, too, since the Mercedes is returning with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine. It鈥檚 unlikely the BMW will be able to beat the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTEC turbodiesel, which will almost certainly take top honors in the fuel economy category. Buyers wanting an X3 with a six-cylinder engine are still in luck, as BMW will again offer the X3 xDrive35i. Don鈥檛 expect any fuel economy gains in this model, however, which returns delivering 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. On the plus side, BMW and the EPA are in agreement on the fuel economy of the 2013 X3 xDrive28i. The automaker originally claimed fuel economy of 24 mpg city and 36 mpg highway on its new 328i sedan (which shares an engine with the X3 xDrive28i), until the EPA rated it at 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.
