Mercedes-Benz Updates 2019 C-Class Coupe, Cabriolet

Mercedes-Benz Updates 2019 C-Class Coupe, Cabriolet

Making their world debuts next week at the New York Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz unveils its revised 2019 C-Class coupe and cabriolet models, including the sportier AMG C43 variants of both closed and open-top luxury cars. Though not entirely re-engineered, they've had some work done under the skin. Under the hood, the engines generate a bit more power. The C300's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder generates 255 horsepower from the former 241 horsepower, though delivering the same 273 lb.-ft. The Mercedes-AMG C43's twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 jumps to 385 horsepower from 362, while torque remains at 384 lb.-ft. Acceleration is brisk, regardless of model, at 5.9 seconds to 60 mph for the C300 coupe and 4.5 seconds for the same sprint in the C43. All-wheel drive is optional in the C300 models and standard for the C43s. With subtle changes on the outside, he C43's front and rear ends get sharper edges and more pronounced bumpers and round tailpipes. The 2019 C-Class has a 10.25-inch centrally-placed infotainment screen, but a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster can be parked ahead of the driver as an option, similar in concept to the system offered on the larger S-Class and E-Class models.

This can also be custom-configured by the driver into "Classic," "Sport" or "Progressive" themes. New steering wheels feature touch-sensitive switches on their spokes, which allow you to swipe the switch like a smartphone in order to change settings within the instrument cluster. Cruise control functions also now reside entirely on the steering wheel, rather than both a side-mounted stalk behind the turn signal plus wheel-mounted controls. The optional head-up display grows in size, too. The C-Class interior options range from traditional-looking wood to carbon-fiber trim. The C now offers wireless charging for electronic devices, also. More elaborate driver-assistance and active safety systems now include improved cameras and radar, enabling the cruise control system to see more than 1,600 feet ahead. Radar scans in two dimensions to a bit more than 800 feet in front, 130 feet to the sides and 260 feet to the rear. In addition, that same radar also sees in three dimensional detail to about 300 feet to the front.

Updates inside include next-level driver assistance and active safety bits like radar that can see in 3D (optional), a digital gauge cluster (optional) and "active lane change assist" where tipping the turn signal stalk engages a lane change. Great for impressing dates. The C-Class also offers driver support as part of the Driver Assistance Package by adjusting road speed when nearing curves intersections or roundabouts by using map and navigation data. With Mercedes calls "active lane change assist," you can change lanes on a highway by merely tipping the turn signal stalk. Also, keyless start/stop is now standard. For the C43 visually, the grille is revised with a double-wing theme close to the full-on V8-powered C63 AMG (not covered here). The new front bumper is more pronounced, while the diffuser-ish rear receives a tweak or two. New exhaust outlets - four round tips, rather than the trapezoid shaped pipes of the V8 AMGs - finish off the rear. Revised LED headlights and taillights are now standard across the C-Class range. The C300's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder now makes 255 hp from the 2018's 241, while the Mercedes-AMG C43's twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 jumps to 385 hp from 2018's 362 hp. 61,795 for the C43 cabriolet, all including destination. Evolution will cost a little, of course. Did you find this article helpful? If so, please share it using the "Join the Conversation" buttons below, and thank you for visiting Daily News Autos.
