2019 BMW 8 Series Convertible Spotted Without Any Camouflage

Going topless never hurts.

Thanks to Auto Express, what you’re looking at are completely undisguised photos of the all-new 2019 BMW 8 Series convertible. The reborn 8 Series coupe debuted at Le Mans last month, and we already knew both a convertible and Gran Coupe are on the way so it’s not like this is all that surprising. But still, we always like to see a car revealed, in some form, before the automaker plans an official unveiling.

Looking more closely at these pictures that were reportedly taken in Scotland during an official photo shoot, we can see a chrome strip along the sides of the tonneau cover. Speaking of which, previous spy shots revealed the 8 Series convertible will be a soft top instead of a folding hardtop. A fabric top will save considerable weight.

However, as with most coupes turned into convertibles, expect some weight gain, likely around 220 lbs to 275 lbs. Expect a total weight of at least 4,400 lbs. You’ll also notice the 8 Series convertible pictured here is the M850i model, powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 530 hp. Zero to 62 mph should take about 3.7 seconds. More than likely the convertible’s trims will mirror those of the coupe, meaning Europe will receive the entry-level 840d and its 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel with 320 hp. Regardless of what’s under the hood, all 8 Series models will come standard with the xDrive all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed automatic.

However, the M850i will sport active rear-wheel steering for a more enhanced driving experience. Tack on a sports exhaust and a rear limited-slip differential and you’re looking at some serious fun. And speaking of fun, will there be an M8 convertible? Of course, though BMW has yet to confirm that, but it makes complete sense. When will the 8 Series convertible you see here be in showrooms? Again, BMW not provided a specific date, but we figure it won’t be too long after the coupe arrives in showrooms later this fall. Chances are the 8 Series convertible will debut in the very near future, either at Paris in October or in LA the following month.
