GM hard brake pedals are now under investigation in Canada because regulators want to determine if Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles may have brake vacuum pump problems.
Transport Canada says nearly 250,000 of the following trucks and SUVs are included in the investigation.
2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade
2014-2017 Chevrolet Silverado LD
2015-2017 Chevrolet Suburban
2015-2017 Chevrolet Tahoe
2014-2017 GMC Sierra LD
2015-2017 GMC Yukon
According to regulators, the vacuum pumps may fail and cause hard brake pedals and extended stopping distances. Canadian officials didn't release additional details, but the action follows a similar investigation opened in the U.S. by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
NHTSA opened its investigation in 2018 after receiving reports of nine incidents of GM vehicles hitting other vehicles or objects, with two people claiming they were injured. The U.S. also received 111 complaints from GM customers concerning hard brake pedals and longer stopping distances.
The U.S. investigation includes more than 2.7 million of these Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles.

Canadian and U.S. investigators are checking into reports the vacuum pumps are losing their ability to create the vacuum needed for the braking systems.
In addition to federal actions, General Motors was served notice of a proposed class action lawsuit in 2018 related to hard brake pedals. As with the federal investigations, attorneys claim brake vacuum pump failures are causing the problems.
