Wipers/Washers - Windshield Wiper Blades Noisy/Juddering
No.: LTB00074
Issue: 1
DATE: 14 Sept. 2007
SECTION: 501-16
Windshield Wiper Blades Noisy, Juddering
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
LR3 (LA) ALL
Range Rover Sport (LS) ALL
CONDITION SUMMARY:
BLADE TAKE PERMANENT SET AND JUDDERS DURING USE
Situation:
The windshield wiper blades are noisy and/or judder as they clear the screen. The condition may be particularly evident at the top of their travel
when the blades move towards the vertical position. The properties of the wiper blade rubber can deteriorate over a time causing the rubber to take
on a permanent set condition after remaining in the park position for a period of time. This condition then results in the blade being driven across the
screen against the permanent set resulting in noisy and/or juddering blades. Once the rubber has acquired a set condition it cannot be corrected.
NOTE:
The permanent set condition does not affect the ability of the wiper system to remove water from the windshield. This issue is purely a customer
irritation issue due to the noise/juddering of the blades across the screen.
Action:
Should a customer complain of noisy/juddering wiper blades, the wiper system components should first be inspected to rule out any of the conditions
listed in the Repair Procedure .
NOTE:
These conditions are not associated with the permanent set condition and therefore not covered by this bulletin. Follow the Repair Procedure
outlined below.

NOTE:
Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only.
Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.
NOTE:
Wiper blades are classed as wear, and tear, items, and as such are subject to Service Adjustment limitations as stated in the Warranty Policy and
Procedures Manual:
^ 2007 and later models: Service adjustments are warranted for 1 year or 12,500 miles (20,000 km) whichever occurs first.
^ 2006 and earlier models: Service adjustments or replacement during normal service or maintenance operations are not covered under
warranty.
Where there is evidence that parts that do not suffer from a permanent set condition have been replaced against this bulletin, the warranty
claim may be rejected.
DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
INSPECT AND IF INDICATED REPLACE WIPER BLADES
NOTE:
The following conditions are not covered by this bulletin:
^ Parts damaged in car washes.
^ Bent levers or primary yokes (wiper blade structure).
^ Bent arm-pieces to modify the attack angle.
^ Damage of the wiping edge of the blade - torn or sections missing.
^ Damage to the wiper blade rubber due to contamination with solvents or silicon based products.
^ Contamination on the wiper blade which would prevent the blade from performing as expected. The function of the wiper blades is to clear
the windshield of water. Examples of contaminants are: fuel, wax, dirt, bird excrement, dead insects, plant material.
NOTE:
A blade without a permanent set should recover to a near 0 degree angle to the beam. A blade without set is NOT covered by this bulletin.
1. Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield and inspect for the permanent set condition by observing the knife edge of the blade.
2. Verify that contamination or damage as noted above has not occurred.
