BMW Recalls X1 SUVs That May Not Protect Occupants

A BMW X1 recall for more than 106,000 SUVs is needed because of problems with B-pillar protection.

The 2016-2019 BMW X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i SUVs may not offer an adequate amount of head protection in a crash where the head contacts the B-pillar.

The automaker says this is a violation of federal safety standard 201 concerning occupant protection.

BMW discovered the problem in January 2019 during tests that showed one of the four B-pillar target points was off, a problem caused by an external engineering company. That company performed tests and simulations for the B-pillar target points but did so without considering the "worst-case head-form positioning."

BMW says it's unaware of any crashes or injuries caused by the problem.

The automaker doesn't know how dealers will fix the B-pillar problems, but BMW will start mailing recall notices by July 2, 2019.

Owners of 2016-2019 BMW X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i SUVs may call the automaker at 800-525-7417.
