Rear Seat Entertainment System: Discs Skip / Will Not Play

CONDITION SUMMARY:

Situation:
On vehicles fitted with the multi-disc Alpine Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) Digital Versatile Display (DVD) system, the discs may not play or the
discs may skip when playing.
Cause:
This may be caused by contamination of the laser unit within the DVD player by dirt or dust.
NOTE:
If the unit is successfully cleaned, please advise the customer of the following to help in protecting the laser from becoming contaminated again:
> Check the condition of discs being used;
> Review the information covered in the 'Loading a DVD/CD' section of the rear seat entertainment manual provided in the information pack
supplied with the vehicle;
> Ensure the DVD player door is closed after loading the magazine to prevent dust ingress onto the discs and laser.
NOTE:
Additional information can be found in SSM39981, DVD disc condition that will inhibit playback.
Action:
In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below to clean the laser unit within the DVD player.

Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only.
Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.
DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. NOTE: The lens cleaner should be used to clean a maximum of 13 DVD players.
Remove the DVD side trim cover.
2. Eject the DVD cassette.
3. Insert the head cleaner DVD into one of the cassette slots.
4. Switch the audio system 'ON'.
5. Select 'DVD' from the audio system home screen.
6. After the end of track '1', select track '3'.
^ At the end of track 3, repeat two more times.
7. Switch the audio system 'OFF'.
8. Eject the DVD cassette.
9. Remove the head cleaner DVD from the cassette.
10. Load six known-good DVD discs into the cassette.
11. Switch the audio system 'ON'.

12. Ensure all six discs are recognized.
^ If any DVD fails to read or initialize, remove the suspect disc from the failed tray and swap with a known good disc. Repeat the disc
selection process to verify that the discs are now reading correctly.
^ If a known good DVD is not read in a slot that has already failed replace the DVD drive.
