Steering - Squeaking Noise When Turning

No.: LTB00072

Issue: 1

Date: 11 Sept 2007

IF THE VEHICLE FALLS WITHIN THE AFFECTED VIN RANGE QUOTED IN LTB00021, THE REPAIRS IN THAT TECHNICAL

BULLETIN MUST BE COMPLETED AND THE SQUEAK RE-VERIFIED PRIOR TO PERFORMING THE REPAIR IN THIS TECHNICAL

BULLETIN. CLAIM THE LTB00021 REPAIR SEPARATELY

SECTION: 211-00

Steering Gear Squeak

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Range Rover Sport (LS) VIN: 6A900290 - Onwards

CONDITION SUMMARY:

STEERING NOISE RESULTING FROM FLUID CONTAMINATION

Situation:

The customer may complain of a squeaking noise from the bulkhead area when turning the steering wheel. On affected vehicles the repairs in

LTB00021 "Steering Gear Noise" must be completed prior to evaluating this noise.

The noise level does not change with road speed but may vary depending on speed of steering wheel rotation and temperature. It is possible that the

power steering fluid has become contaminated.

Action:

Should a customer express concern, and the repair in LTB00021 on affected vehicles has been unsuccessful, flush the steering system with fresh

fluid as specified, and replace the steering gear and reservoir. Exercise caution to ensure extreme cleanliness at all stages of this repair.

PARTS

WARRANTY

FLUSH POWER STEERING SYSTEM

NOTE:

To reduce spillage of fluid on the vehicle, cover the area beneath the fluid reservoir with suitable rag.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

2010 Land Rover Range Rover Sport (LS) V8-5.0L Page 198

1. Remove the power steering reservoir from the dovetail bracket. (Figure 1)

NOTE:

Take appropriate steps to ensure minimal fluid loss from reservoir during this process.

2. Disconnect the power steering return hose from the reservoir and plug the reservoir return port with a short plugged hose. (Position [1] Figure

2)

CAUTION:

Care must be taken to avoid kinking the hose when extending it to the drainage container.

3. Extend the removed return hose (Position [2] Figure 2) using the existing connector and enough suitable extension hose to place the outlet in a

drainage container.

4. Clamp the temporary extension with hose clamps to secure.

5. Remove the reservoir filler cap.

6. Remove the 0-ring from the filler cap and used it with a funnel fitted into the reservoir neck to ensure a tight fit.

7. Hold the funnel steady, and add the specified PS fluid until it fills the funnel approximately halfway.

WARNING:

Feet must be clear of wheels/tires during the following operation.

NOTE:

Be prepared to carry out the filling procedure with FOUR LITERS (FOUR QUARTS) of PAS fluid simultaneously as the engine start and

steering wheel movement is performed by the assistant.

CAUTION:

Do not allow the level in the reservoir to fall below the minimum mark at any time and ensure the engine is turned off just as the full

amount of fluid has entered the reservoir, to avoid running the system dry.

8. Perform the following two steps simultaneously:

^ Have an assistant start the engine.

^ Immediately upon engine start-up begin filling the funnel/reservoir with PAS fluid ensuring that the mid-point level is maintained in the

funnel. (Figure 4)

9. Have the assistant turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock three times over approximately 30 seconds.

10. Continue to pour until the four liters (4 quarts) of fluid has been added (approximately 30 seconds).

11. Instruct the assistant to shut off the engine just as the final fluid is entering the reservoir.

12. Check the level in the reservoir/funnel.

13. If the level is too high (some fluid remaining in the funnel) start the engine momentarily (one or two seconds) until the fluid level falls into the

reservoir.

14. Remove funnel and discard the filler cap 0-ring.

REPLACE STEERING RACK AND RESERVOIR

NOTE:

Take appropriate steps to ensure minimal fluid loss from the reservoir during this process.

1. Siphon any remaining fluid from the reservoir and discard the removed fluid.

2. Remove the temporary return hose extension assembly used during flushing.

3. Refer to Workshop Manual, GTR Section 211-02 and remove the old power steering fluid reservoir.

4. Carefully clean any spillage from around the area.

5. Refer to Workshop Manual, GTR Section 211-02 and replace the steering gear.

6. Refer to Workshop Manual, GTR Section 211-02 and install the new power steering fluid reservoir.
