BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Coming To Fight The New Mercedes CLA

This is our best look yet at the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the long-rumored BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe out in the wild, but our spies have spotted a new prototype being put through its paces. Development is clearly gathering pace since the prototype now sports sleek-looking production headlights and taillights.

Previous rumors suggested the front lights will be designed as a homage to the old BMW 2002, but as you can see from the photos it features the familiar modern BMW look. Based on the next-generation 2 Series, the Gran Coupe version will bridge the gap between the 1 Series Sedan and the 3 Series Sedan and rival the next-generation Mercedes CLA.

With a length of around 14.7 feet, the Gran Tourer is roughly the same length as the 2 Series Gran Tourer MPV. While rumors suggested the 2 Series Gran Coupe will come with rear-wheel drive, it’s now being developed as a front-wheel-drive car with an optional xDrive system.

As for powertrains, the range-topping 2 Series Gran Coupe, likely to be called the M235i, will reportedly be powered by a B48 engine with around 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, which is the same engine found in the X2 M Performance model.

Judging from the trunk-lid spoiler and dual exhaust tips, we’re likely looking at a prototype of the sporty M235i. It looks practically production ready, so don’t be surprised if it launches early next year. Don't get your hopes up for a four-door BMW M2 though because recent reports claim that a full-fat M2 Gran Coupe won’t be joining the 2 Series family, sadly.
