Just this week, General Motors recalled 230,000 Chevy, Buick, and GMC models over faulty brakes built by Germany's ZF Group. The same recall also affected 150,000 Jeep and Dodge models that used the brakes from the same supplier.
It seems GM isn't quite out of the water yet, because the NHTSA has just issued a recall for 1,015,918 trucks and SUVs from Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac. The recall affects 2015 models of the Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado 1500, the GMC Yukon and Sierra 1500, and the Cadillac Escalade, all of which are built on the same platform and use the same electric power steering system.
In certain cases, the electric power steering assist may be lost, then suddenly regained. This issue would make it more difficult to steer the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of an accident. A lack of power steering could be dangerous in any car, but we are talking about vehicles weighing nearly 6,000 pounds, so the risk of having no power steering could be disastrous.
Last year, GM issued a similar recall for 2014 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks for faulty power steering, though we can't say for sure if these two recalls are related.
So far, GM has not issued a timetable for when this issue will be resolved. The recall notice says "GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the EPS module software, free of charge," but there is no warning that the trucks and SUVs are unsafe to drive. If you do own one of the Chevy, GMC, or Cadillac models affected, just stay alert in case you feel the steering wheel suddenly get heavy, then return to normal.
