Fuel System - Creaking Noise From Fuel Tank Area

'Creak' Noise from Upper Fuel Tank Area



AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:



Range Rover (LM)

Model Year: 2010 - Onwards



CONDITION SUMMARY:



Situation:



A creak noise may be heard from under the rear seat area when traveling on an uneven road surface. This noise may be more evident when the fuel



tank is full. This may be caused by the fuel tank, when full, contacting the upper body bracket.



NOTE:



The fuel tank must be below one-quarter (1/4) of a tank to perform the Repair Procedure.



Action:



In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below to install a foam pad between the fuel tank and upper



body bracket.

REPAIR PROCEDURE



INSTALL FOAM PAD

WARNING:



Ensure the fuel tank level is less than one-quarter (1/4) of a tank.



1. Refer to Workshop Manual, section 501-05: Interior Trim and Ornamentation, and remove the left-hand (LH) and right-hand (RH) C-pillar lower



trim panels.



2. Release the spare wheel removal straps.



Remove the two Allen bolts.



3. Lift the carpet for access.



4. Remove the LH fuel tank access cover: (Figure 1)



^ Remove the four nuts.



WARNING:



Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.



5. Refer to Workshop Manual, section 100-02: Jacking and Lifting, and raise and support the vehicle.



6. Release the tailpipe: (Figure 2)



^ Remove the two nuts.



7. Remove the driveshaft heat shield: (Figure 3)



^ Remove the eight screws.

8. Remove the LH fuel tank shield: (Figure 4)



^ Remove the six bolts.



^ Remove the two nuts.



NOTE:



Do not completely remove the fixing; release only half-way.



NOTE:

9. Release the fuel tank center fixing. (Figure 5)

10. Release the fuel tank: (Figure 6)



^ Remove the bolt.



^ Allow the fuel tank to lower to gain sufficient access to fit the foam pad.



11. Lower the vehicle.



NOTE:



Access is through the aperture in the body.



NOTE:



Fuel tank shown removed for clarity.



12. Install the foam pad: (Figure 7)



^ Clean the mounting surface.



^ Remove the self adhesive backing.



^ Position the foam pad centrally on the raised section of the body.



13. Raise the vehicle.



14. Install the fuel tank support strap securing bolt: (Figure 6)



^ Tighten bolt to 19Nm (14 lbf ft).

15. Tighten the center bolt to 19Nm (14 lbf ft). (Figure 5)



16. Tighten the fuel tank center fixing to 19Nm (14 lbf ft).



17. Install the fuel tank shield.



^ Tighten the nuts and bolts to 25Nm (18 lbf ft). (Figure 4)



18. Install the driveshaft heat shield: (Figure 3)



^ Tighten the eight screws to 5Nm (3.5 lbf ft).



19. Secure the tailpipe: (Figure 2)



^ Tighten the two nuts to 47 Nm (35 lbf ft).



20. Lower the vehicle.



21. Install the LH fuel tank access cover: (Figure 1)



^ Tighten the four nuts to 10Nm (7lbf ft).



22. Position the carpet.



23. Attach the spare wheel removal straps:



^ Tighten the Allen bolts to 45Nm (33 lbf ft).



24. Refer to Workshop Manual, section 501-05: Interior Trim and Ornamentation, and install the LH and RH C-pillar lower trim panels.
