Let's face it, we are all going to get old at some point. And by old, we mean the thought of driving a little sports car fills us with dread instead of spunk. Our backs and bones will ache, making us yearn for a car that eases the pain of the daily drive. As enthusiasts, owning a boring car is out of the question. We want to spend our retirement in as much comfort as possible. And if money is no object, there's no more comfortable car on the planet than a Rolls-Royce Phantom. The current Phantom is about to be replaced and we can't wait to see what Rolls-Royce has up its sleeve for the next one. The Phantom is perfect because its massive size doesn't require the occupant to bend down very far to get in. Once inside, we can be chauffeured around town in a leather-filled testament to British luxury. The Phantom is the perfect car for old people, if you can afford to buy one.
They say that "you get driven in a Rolls-Royce, but you drive a Bentley." With that in mind, we have selected the Bentley Bentayga for this list. Automakers are cashing in on the SUV trend, and we don't really blame them for going where the money is. Older people like SUVs because they are easy to get in and out of. The Bentayga even has adjustable ride height the make it even easier to match the car to the perfect level. This SUV is also extremely comfortable, so we wouldn't mind driving it over long distances in our care-free retirement days.
Ever since the brand was introduced in 1989, Lexus has been synonymous with an older clientele. Lexus has recently been trying to fight this stodgy image with cars like the RC-F, but it's not the worst thing in the world to have cars that old people love. We'd love to cruise around in the new LC500, but we think that the larger LS500 would be better for older drivers. The LS has always been softer than its German rivals at the expense of being less "sporty." We think that the new LS500 is particularly good for old drivers thanks to its advanced safety features that can help steer the car away from danger and bring it to a safe stop.
We had to put at least one wild card on this list, and for that we turn to Cadillac. Like Lexus, Cadillac has been stuck in a bit of a rut of catering to old people. Back in 2004, Cadillac tried to change people's perception of the brand with the first ever Corvette-powered CTS-V. We know the stereotype that old people drive Corvettes, but what happens when they can't get physically get in one anymore? Luckily, Cadillac shoves the engine from the Corvette Z06 into a CTS to create a four-door Corvette that old people can easily drive.
We wanted to balance this list with a little sensibility, and there is no better place for sensibility than Sweden. The Volvo XC90 is a gorgeous SUV that we'd be happy to drive in our Autumn years. Aside from its great looks and surprising power, the XC90's best feature is its amazing safety. Volvo has promised a "death-proof" car by 2020, which is perfect for elderly drivers. We've all read stories of old drivers getting into dangerous situations on the road. If only they'd been driving Volvos.
