At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Bentley unveiled the long-rumored hybrid version of the Bentayga SUV. Dubbed the “world’s first luxury hybrid SUV,” the Bentayga Hybrid is powered by the same powertrain as the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid, a combination of a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 and an electric motor. No performance figures or pricing details have yet been released yet, but it’s expected to deliver a combined 450 horsepower and it goes without saying it will be expensive.
Fuel economy probably isn’t high on the list of priorities for those that can afford a swanky SUV, but Bentley has announced the Bentayga Hybrid will feature an innovative, intelligent navigation system that will help you save fuel. Bentley claims when a destination is programmed into the navigation system, the Bentayga Hybrid calculates the best combination of electric drive and V6 engine power to maximize fuel efficiency during a journey. The correct drive mode is automatically engaged for each part of the journey, as the car constantly calculates the best use of battery charge while storing electrical energy for sections where it is most needed.
Arriving in a city, for example, will engage the Bentayga Hybrid’s EV-only mode, which lasts up to 31 miles on a single charge. The system will even reduce the on-board charge to zero as the Bentayga reaches its destination. A full charge of the battery from a domestic household socket will take 7.5 hours, but customers with an industrial connection can reduce the charge time to just 2.5 hours.
