2019 Hyundai Santa Fe vs. the 2018 Nissan Murano

Powertrain: 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 185 hp or a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine rated at 235 hp. Both come with an eight-speed transmission. A diesel option is planned.

Technology: A 7-inch multimedia touch screen (8-inch on Ultimate trim) with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability and four USB ports are among the standard tech features.

Safety: Standard forward collision-avoidance assist, driver attention warning, blind-spot collision warning and lane keep assist. Parking distance warning and rear occupant alert are standard on the SEL Plus and higher trims.

Competitors: Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Outback

Strengths: Sharp looks, inside and out, in a segment with either too much going on or not enough. A day spent driving in the high altitudes of Utah showed that the Santa Fe's handling, whether around town or off the beaten path, was up to the challenge.

Weaknesses: The diesel variant is unavailable at launch.

Bottom line: The optional turbo engine along with all-wheel drive, combined with looks similar to the already popular Kona subcompact crossover, could make the redesigned Santa Fe an enticing option for crossover customers.
