Badgers vs. the Men of the Minnesota Boat Club: Sponsored by Schlitz Brewing of Milwaukee

Students at the University of Wisconsin initiated their first rowing club in 1874,[1] the same year the University hired John Bascom to serve as president, and this was an unfortunate coincidence.[2] Bascom arrived in Madison with an actively unsupportive stance toward college athletics, and while he tolerated the presence of a student-run rowing club, he offered nothing in the way of resources or encouragement to the athletically-inclined students. Competition with other clubs was out of the question; Bascom harbored concerns that if he opened Wisconsin’s storied doors to outside crews the vices of betting and drinking would waft in and corrupt his upstanding student body. Bascom underscored his dislike of collegiate sports by devoting a substantial passage of his baccalaureate sermon, ‘The Seat of Sin’ to the condemnation of athletics, specifically college regattas and ball games.[3]
Bascom’s student body was well-heeled and interested in popular trends, often taking social cues from prestigious eastern schools where intercollegiate rowing was on the rise.[4] Undeterred by the administration’s dismissive stance, the students cultivated their rowing club, and a school-wide interest in intramural rowing grew, buoyed by the rise of the fraternity system throughout the 1870s and ‘80s. Ultimately, however, the sport was constrained by the capacity of the student body to support it, forcing the Badgers to make the most of recreational rowing on Lake Mendota. And they did, forming crews for lively informal, intra-class and intra-college contests.[5]
Throughout the 1870s, national interest in rowing increased significantly. As amateur rowing spread westward across the country, a number of new clubs popped up in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Yet rowing remained stubbornly insular at the University of Wisconsin. An 1886 editorial in the University Press noted that:
‘…students from other colleges visiting the University have often expressed surprise on learning that we possessed no boat [house]. With unrivalled facilities and an abundance of talent in this line, when we stop and think of the matter it must seem rather unaccountable even to ourselves.’ [6]
Shortly after Bascom retired in 1887, several undergraduates—including a W.T. Saucerman—transferred to Wisconsin. They arrived with previous competitive rowing experience and a double shell that quickly became a big attraction. Saucerman, a passionate rower, became such a strong vocal advocate for advancing a new boat club at Wisconsin[7] that by the late 1880s a more robust rowing program began to take shape.
A group of faculty members joined the students, in 1889, to form an ambitious new boat club with plans to procure two eight-oared shells and designs from architects Conover and Porter for a spacious boathouse. Despite the growing interest and progress, the University remained unsupportive; the entire financial burden of the boathouse project fell to the students. After securing permission from the regents to build between the Old Red Gym and the shores of Lake Mendota, the students successfully raised enough money through member subscriptions to allow construction to begin, but the project quickly stalled out as sponsor funds failed to keep up with construction costs.[8]
With providential timing, the University retained Dr. Charles Kendall Adams in September of 1892 to serve as president. In marked contrast to Bascom, Adams arrived in Wisconsin with a fierce determination to promote athletics. Adams came directly from Cornell, where he had served as president since 1885, the same year Cornell engaged professional sculler Charles E. Courtney as their head crew coach. During Adams’ tenure, Cornell’s rowing program had gained national recognition for its successful intercollegiate rowing.[9] Moreover, Cornell’s rowing program provided a powerful example of how athletics could instill a sense of University spirit throughout the entire community, to the student body as well as to the townspeople, generating good will that could be leveraged to support the University in other ways.
Adams immediately set to work resurrecting the stalled boathouse project. In December of 1892, he chaired the largest meeting the college had had to date, at which he facilitated the formation of the University Boat House Company to serve as a new vehicle for collecting subscriptions by issuing shares. He successfully raised the outstanding $4500[10] and construction resumed in March of 1893. The impressive new boathouse was finished posthaste, equipped to serve faculty, students, and the community, with room for 80 small boats and several racing shells. It even had a commercial dock.
Drawing on his Cornell connections, Adams recruited Amos Marston, a former rowing captain who had trained under Courtney, to whip the Badgers into shape for their third non-intramural contest against the Delawares from Chicago.[11] Marston passed on Countney’s winning training techniques, helping Wisconsin out-pull the Delawares in the spring of 1894. With a new boathouse, administrative support, two wins under their trau, and their first coach secured, the Badgers were itching to engage in more serious competition.
Without missing a beat, the Ulhlein family of Schlitz Brewing in Milwaukee stepped up, offering the grand Schlitz Challenge Cup to be given to the winner of three consecutive races between Wisconsin and a rival of their choosing. The silver cup was magnificent. Lined with gold and standing three feet high, it was a dazzling prize.
The sketch to the right was printed on the front page of the June 24, 1894 St Paul Daily Globe. It is not clear that the trophy, or any other image of it exists The trophy was modeled after The Schlitz Atlas (shown above) which was used for marketing in the late 1880s.
Had there been another collegiate team within close proximity to Madison, it’s almost certain Wisconsin would have engaged them. The closest approximation to a high-powered undergraduate crew, within striking distance of Madison, were the Men of the Minnesota Boat Club (MBC), still glowing from their victorious winning streak of 1893 (see Love-Hate Eight Part 2). The Men of MBC were considered to be nearly as competitive as the elite collegiate teams of the east coast.
This new rivalry opened up fresh opportunities for both teams. The Badgers would gain valuable race experience, while the Men of MBC would have the opportunity to win the stunningly beautiful Schlitz Cup and finally race The Geneva, their newly purchased eight (see . After two decades in small boats and fours, this was not an opportunity to squander.
The Wisconsin Badgers traveled to Lake Minnetonka to race the Men of MBC on June 24, 1894. At that time, neither team could have foreseen how much they would change over the course of this three-year rivalry. Stay tuned....

Procedure
When repairing or doing reforming work or before welding in new parts within the body shell structure, the vehicle is aligned in the usual manner
using the suitable straightening tool set. The straightening tool for tolerance checking with the new plug gauge (tip angle 90°) ensures that the
vehicle is fixed parallel to the straightening bench.
In the case of all new steel body structures in the central floor area between the front and rear axle, this measuring point will be marked with a center
point for the embossing plug gauge. In addition a ring-shaped part circle bead or full circle bead (3) is provided for locating the center point
embossing of the floor area.

Mounting clips broken or not correctly engaged.
Remedy:
Replace all mounting clips with collar nuts with shims (picture 2):
Adapter set (203 589 02 31 00) is required to perform the work.
The underfloor paneling does not have to be removed.
1. Loosen all mounting clips. Use a 13 mm socket for this (picture 3).
2. Unscrew all mounting clips.
3. Treat all threaded pins with wax (picture 4). During spraying the underfloor paneling has to be pressed upwards against the vehicle's underfloor.
4. Install a spacer washer on every threaded pin between underfloor and underfloor paneling. Each time, carefully lift the underfloor paneling from
the underfloor (picture 5). During installation, ensure that the side with the engagement lobes points downwards.
After installation, the spacer washer must be in full contact with the underfloor (picture 6).
Note:
The spacer washers prevent the underfloor paneling from touching the vehicle underfloor and thus prevent possible corrosion effects
5. Install collar nuts.

The threaded pin does not protrude out of the collar nut due to its length (picture 7).

Cause:
Axial shifting (temperature-related) of the individual belt pulleys and guide pulleys can lead to squeaking noises in isolated cases.
Remedy:
Application of Krytox lubricant - belt dressing A000 989 36 60 (from lubricating kit A000 580 03 50) - one to two drops at each point to the inner
and outer side edges of the poly-V belt. Procedure:
- Bring the engine to the operating temperature (80 deg. C) and switch it off.
- Remove top front engine cover as required to get access to the poly-V-belt.
- Apply one to two drops of Krytox lubricant to the inner and outer side edges of the poly-V belt near the top idler pulley (important: only treat the
edges of the belt. If the lubricant is applied to the running surface of the belt, this can cause the poly-V belt to slip).
- Start the engine so that the lubricant can spread along the edges of the belt.

Clearcoat Paint Systems with Higher Scratch Resistance
Since June 2002, starting with the model 215, clear paint Systems with higher scratch resistance came into use. The changeover took place in the
following years and was completed by mid 2004.
From June 2002 up to 06/30/2010 with a few exception (see Table) all vehicles with a more scratch resistant clear paint system, are marked with a
"C" in front of the paint code on the model plate.
As since 2005 on all models only the scratch resistant clear paint systems are always used, the identification "C" is deleted as of 7/1/2010.
In the table below, the data for the production changeover and marking are once again listed for the period 2002 up to June 2010.

Special protection vehicles (Guard) were painted with conventional dual-component Systems up to 01/2005 The changeover to the new scratch
resistant systems took place in 02/2005. As of this time all vehicles are also marked with a "C".
In collaboration with all of our approved paint partners suitable paint repair systems have been developed for the new clearcoat paints with improved
scratch resistance and these have been approved after comprehensive on-road testing.
All the paint partners we approve have incorporated the repair instructions and materials to be used in their repair guidelines.
These can be found on the After-Sales paint technology internet page.
The paint specialists of these companies are also available to help you on site, if required. Please remember to ensure without fail, that only these
approved refinish systems are used for paint repair.
This also always applies to Mercedes-Benz service operations that out source their paint work to external paint operators.
These Mercedes-Benz service operations are responsible for ensuring that only the approved refinish systems are used.
The application methods have not been changed.
The plastic attachment parts continue to be coated with conventional 2-K-clear coats. In the case of repair we recommend the scratch resistant repair
systems for plastic parts.
The existing sanding and polishing process has been changed. These techniques for scratch resistant paint are described in the work instructions
AR98.00-P-0012A.
The process and auxiliary materials to be used and the required workshop equipment are specified in detail.

Please remember that our paint and polish partners offer a wide variety of training courses on repair materials and processes, which are normally free
of charge.
According to our knowledge the training capacities of the paint suppliers are underutilized. We therefore ask you to take advantage of the

Remedy:
Please follow the 3 scenarios outlined here:
1. For vehicles that only receive a jump-start on site (at the break-down location) without battery replacement, no action is necessary.
2. On-site battery replacement: If a jump-start was not successful in starting the car, use the Midtronics tester to determine whether the battery needs
a replacement. Should the Midtronics test results indicate a battery replacement is needed, please save a copy and on your records. Service
Engineering will request this data for our investigation
3. If the car comes to the workshop, you must have the following information on hand.
A. Midtronics Test data
B. Intelligent Battery sensor (IBS) data.
Fax the IBS and Midtronics Test Data to: 201 573 4381. In the subject line, please include this title:
^ "207/212 IBS and Midtronics Data - F123456" where F123456 indicate the last 7 VIN Characters.
^ Instructions on how to get the IBS data are in the attachment. Should a vehicle come to the workshop with this condition and this data was not
provided, your claim will be denied.

Recent attempts manipulating vehicle mileage through the use of third party electronic devices installed on Mercedes-Benz vehicles are being
reported.

There are several CAN manipulation devices on the market. Be particularly aware of two devices which are installed in tandem with the instrument
cluster or the EIS (Figure 1) and a circuit board which can be installed directly within the EIS (Figure 2).
If vehicle electronics malfunction, control units display implausible mileage readings, or malfunctions lack corresponding default entries; check the
vehicle for non-factory hardware. These are often installed in the interior wiring harness of the vehicle. Another example would be the TV enable
module for the COMAND APS NTG2 in Figure 3.
Possible malfunctions are:
^ Random unlocking or locking of the vehicle while driving
^ Temporary or continuous hazard warning system activation
^ Sudden mileage increase in the IC
If there is evidence that the vehicle has been tampered with (mileage altering device, aftermarket installation etc) please provide as much supporting
documents (pictures, test results, etc.) and send an email with the supporting documents to the Warranty Services Group and request that the vehicle
be put on warranty status.
Warranty will determine the correct status to be applied (usually status 8 which requires AOM review before any repairs are performed), file the
supporting documentation and add notes into our vehicle master system.
Any vehicle with a warranty status will have an alert box pop up when VMI is run to inform the dealer of this status.
Any malfunctions or subsequent damage to other parts due to the installation of foreign parts are not covered by Warranty. The repair costs should
be charged to the customer.

As of the 204 launch in 2008, diagnosis read outs have been possible for the battery sensor data stored in the signal acquisition and actuation module
(SAM), and the CAN bus keepawake unit detection in the central gateway. This data is essential in ascertaining reasons for a discharged battery.
This is described in SD media as of 11/2010 for the 204, 207, and 212 models.
The menu navigation for reading out the battery sensor data in Xentry or DAS is Illustrated in Figure 1 below.
