Buying a used Chevrolet Cruze

2012 Chevrolet Cruze

In Brief

Ever since it got launched in India in 2009, the Chevrolet Cruze has been one of the most aspired for D-segment sedans on sale, and with good reason. The muscular shape and size of the car look fantastic. And then there are those big wheel arches and the massive honeycomb front grille. The Cruze is not just a great looking car but has a great heart to go with it as well. The 2.0-litre VCDI mill is brilliant in terms of performance and output. Yes it had a rather annoying turbo lag below 2,000rpm but Chevrolet attended to this problem when it launched the facelifted one in 2012. The refreshed Cruze then pumped 166PS instead of 150PS and 380Nm as opposed to the 327Nm in its predecessor.

On Road

Available with just the diesel engine option, the Chevrolet Cruze is a delight for anyone who loves to drive. The engine is energetic and the driving dynamics well sorted to give you that much sought after driving pleasure. Throttle response is good and the car doesn't demand too many shifts as the torque is available throughout the rev range. And then for the few who still want more, its design still doesn't feel dated even after five years.

Moving In

On the inside, the Chevrolet Cruze is sportier than any other car in its class. While most manufacturers have focused on luxury, Chevrolet has gone on to think out of the box and give its interiors a youthful appeal. There is enough space too, especially in this updated model. The suspension was stiffened up in the refreshed model but it doesn't quite have a negative effect on the handling mainly due to the increased weight of the engine. That said, this same attribute does inspire confidence when attacking a series of bends.

Efficiency

The Chevrolet Cruze has not earned a name for itself due to its efficiency but doesn't mean that it is an absolute slacker when it comes to it. Expect the 6-speed manual transmission variant to return an overall efficiency of around 12-13kmpl. The automatic will return a slightly lesser figure.

2012 Chevrolet Cruze in action

Buying used

Till about a few years ago, a Cruze would have been quite an expensive proposition to buy even in the used market but thanks to the launch of cars like the 2013 Skoda Octavia and the Hyundai Elantra, it is now a lot easier to buy one. That said, while the Chevrolet Cruze is a fantastic looking car that is equally fun to drive, it might not be the best when it comes to maintenance. Spares and running costs are expensive, especially when compared to the other cars in its class.

So before you actually write that cheque, drive the car around to get a feel of the immediate maintenance that the car demands. Shift between gears to check the condition of the clutch, as it can be quite an expensive part to replace. And while you are at it, you can also check the brakes and electricals.

Money-wise

Despite the fact that the Chevrolet Cruze is a car that is expensive to maintain, it hasn’t been one of those models that depreciates very quickly. Even today the 2009/2010 pre-facelift Chevrolet Cruze will come in the range of around Rs 7-7.5 lakh and consider Rs 1-1.5 lakh more approximately for every year younger car.

Buying a used Maruti Alto

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10

In Brief

For anyone looking to purchase their first budget small car, the Maruti Alto is undoubtedly part of the discussion, and even more so when buying used. It’s small and easy to drive, low on maintenance and most importantly it’s extremely efficient. In fact it’s even quite comfortable for a car of that size. All of this makes it an extremely easy car to own. Now when you look out for a used Alto, you might get one with several engine options – there was the 800cc 3-cylinder motor which is essentially the same one that works force on the current Alto800, a 1.1-litre 4-cylinder mill and of course the Alto K10 with the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder motor.

On Road

Yes, the 800cc mill does seem a rather small one on paper, but consider into your calculations that the car weighs less than 800kg and it makes for quite a sensible purchase. While the Alto has never been bred for performance, it does pretty well in the city as well as for short highway runs. The small dimensions ensure that you can easily manoeuvre the car through traffic and park it with ease in the tightest of spots. And this especially comes in handy considering that most people who purchase this car are first-time buyers. While the 800cc Alto is available in the used car market pretty easily, if you want either of the two larger motors, you will have to search a bit. That said, the 1.1-litre as well as the old K10 were both absolutely fantastic machines and did offer marginally better performance than its smaller sibling.

Moving In

On the inside, you will be greeted by a very basic dashboard layout with minimal features. Despite the small dimensions of the Alto, there is a fair amount of space on the inside. It can comfortably seat three average sized Indians at the back without having to struggle for shoulder or leg room. With regards to features, the base LX variant of the Alto came with optional AC but the higher LXi and the VXi (1.1-litre) were equipped with AC as well as power steering.

Efficiency

The Marutis have always been known for its frugal and maintenance free engines and the Alto is no different. In terms of efficiency you can expect the Alto to return around 14-15 kilometres to a litre of fuel.

Maruti Alto800

Buying used

The Alto is a basic car with just the things you need in it and that is exactly what makes it easier to maintain. The Alto did not come with a factory fitted music system so it is best to get it checked before actually making the purchase. Like every car, the Alto too has been updated from time to time right from its launch in the early 2000s and keeping that in mind, it is best to opt for a car that is relatively newer. Models from after 2006-2007 too come at an extremely affordable price and if you are lucky enough, you might even find one with very few kilometres on the clock. Since the Alto retails at a pretty affordable price, in the used market it comes fairly cheap too and with that mind it is in fact a good car to bet your money on.

Money-wise

The Alto will easily be available starting as low as Rs 60,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh for the latest Alto800. While some of the first generation Altos are still on sale in the used car market, it is advisable to pick a car that is at the max 6-7 years old. Needless to say the price may vary as per the kilometres on the clock and the condition of the car.

Buying a used Tata Nano

Buying a used Tata Nano

In Brief

You can call the Tata Nano a lot of things – poor man’s car, world’s cheapest car or the car that fizzled out after a massive launch. But one thing you can’t call it is a bad car for its price. The Nano is an example for generations ahead in frugal and innovative engineering. Keeping things simple makes the Nano easy to own and run and as a used car, a safer bet to buy than most other cars in the market. At the heart of it, the Nano sports a 624cc two cylinder petrol engine stacked under the rear seat. It produces 38PS of power, enough to haul the 600kg hatchback at pace with traffic in the city.

On the road

This 0.6-litre engine is small no doubt but mated to the 4-speed manual gearbox specifically engineered for the Nano, has spring in its stride. The lightweight hatchback feels nimble in the City and although it isn’t a car for the highway, the Nano can cruise at high double digit speeds if need be. Small 12 inch wheels and short wheelbase give the Nano a choppy ride but that was expected of a car of this size. It’s maneuverability is fantastic and the city and can be parked in the tightest of spots giving the Nano an advantage over rest of its 4-wheeled brethren. Lack of power steering does make the Nano a tedious car though at crawling speeds. The Nano Twist with its power steering came only this year so you will not get a power steering equipped Nano in the market just yet.

Moving in

With the wheels pushed to their extremities and very little storage space to boast of, the Nano has been optimized for a large cabin. The car’s height further adds to the space on the inside and the slender door panels and bare bones basic dashboard make more space than you’d expect of a car of this price and size. Fitting in a fifth passenger is a squeeze though as the Nano isn’t a wide car. On the features front, the base variant gets nothing. The mid spec Nano gets air conditioning and the top end LX variant (we are excluding the newer Nano Twist versions) gets fog lamps, front power windows, a trip computer, and an audio system with Aux-in and USB connectivity.

Efficiency

While Tata Motors quotes an ARAI certified mileage for the Nano in the range of 25kmpl, the Nano will return a shade under 20kmpl in normal driving conditions consistently.

Buying used

The Nano as we mentioned earlier, takes you back to cars of the old, simple build and fewer electronics to mess with the car as it gets older. That makes the car easier and cheaper to repair and that is a major aspect in favour of a used Nano. That said, electrical like power windows on the top end version and electricals in general for cars that come fitted with aftermarket equipment needs to be checked. That’s because the Nano has a small battery that isn’t capable of handling high demands. It tends to drain out earlier as well and has a shorter life than on most other cars. It is best to opt for a car 2012 onwards as Tata Motors sorted out a lot of issues that plagued the car when it was launched by then. The Nano is the most affordable car to buy and run in the used car market so if you are looking for a first car to learn driving or a really cheap city runabout, it’s a good car to put your money on.

Money-Wise

A 2010 top-end Nano will cost you in the range of Rs 60,000-70,000 if it’s a low mileage example. Even lower for a car with say about 50K on the Odo.  Expect prices to rise by Rs 10,000-15,000 with a year younger car but of course this is just a ball park figure. Prices will vary depending on mileage, and quality of the example.

Buying a used Skoda Laura

Buying a used Skoda Laura

In Brief

Let’s focus on the post facelift Laura here, one that came in 2009 as owning and maintaining a car older than six years isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. The Laura was one of the few solidly built cars around the time that was a notch under the German executive sedans. It got popular with up and coming customers but has developed a reputation for being a high maintenance car. It came with a popular 2.0-litre TDI engine producing about 140PS of power and a quick 1.8-TSI petrol engine with 160PS output. It was built like a tank and in ways, feels even tougher than the current generation Octavia, which is the Laura’s successor.

On the road

The Laura is a driver’s delight, in both the petrol and diesel, more so the former. And that’s due to its strong engines, excellent driving dynamics, good ride and that tank like build. You enjoy driving the Laura harder than usual and its mile munching ability (the diesel going by its economics) makes for some very high mileage cars on the market. Skoda also had a detuned 110PS diesel mated to a manual gearbox in addition to the 140PS with its DSG 6-speed unit.

Moving in

You feel that sense of security as speeds build in the Laura and that’s mainly due to the insulated cabin. Sure the car has a fantastic chassis and suspension set up but it’s that sense of disconnect from the environment that makes the interior of the Laura a good place to be in, for a car of this price. The L&K and Elegance are well specified with leather upholstery and the former and vRS variants of the Laura also get a 6.5-inch TFT display. The large 560-litre boot is handy too for a getaway with a full set of passengers.

Efficiency

The TSI petrol is a thirsty giant giving an ARAI certified mileage in the range of 13.4-14.6kmpl across all petrol variants and the diesel ranges between 18.3-20kmpl. In the real world expect about 4kmpl drop in actual figures.

Buying used

Till about a year ago, you’d have to be a wily customer to maintain and run a Skoda, with even authorized workshops earning a reputation of posting exorbitant bills for minor works. And it went to an extent to where the Skoda brand took a major hit. Now Skoda is rebuilding that lost reputation by focusing on repairing over replacing and getting service costs in check and that makes owning a used Laura a better proposition now than before. That said, spares and running costs are comparatively expensive to a car of other makes of this price so check a car well before you sign the dotted line.

Firstly, check for a smooth shifting gearbox in the manuals and a heavy clutch. In the automatics, run through the gears while giving the car a bit more gas as usual to check for gear shifts with jerk and delay. The clutch plate on a Laura is expensive to replace so these checks are important. Brakes again need to be in top shape so check for stopping power and progressive feel as you step on the brakes. The air conditioning system for cooling related issues should be tested as the compressor is expensive. Finally all electrical switches like power windows should be checked. All this comes after going through the car’s service history though. The Laura is a car a lot of owners preferred to service outside the authorized service network so get a proper read through the car’s history.

Money-wise

The Laura is a car that depreciates heavily, especially the petrol variants. A top of the line diesel Laura from 2009 has lost value considerably and will come in the range of Rs 7.5-8 lakh while mid spec versions will cost between Rs 6.5-7 lakh. Add about 1-1.2 lakh more for every year younger car. This is just a range though as you will find different prices based on mileage, variants and quality.

The petrol vRS variants have dropped to as low as Rs 7-8 lakh for a 2011 variant. It’s one good performance sedan to buy instead of say a new Honda Amaze. Running costs though will be quite high.
