Buying a used Maruti Suzuki SX4

In Brief

The SX4 has had a very average sales run during its eight year span. Since Maruti launched the SX4 in 2007, the sedan hasn’t quite hit the sweet spot in the C-segment. It comes with petrol and diesel engines, is very spacious on the inside and has a big boot. But buyers haven’t found the SX4 premium enough and the SX4’s positioning too has been a notch below likes of the Honda City and Hyundai Verna. And now the sedan will soon go out of production. While the positives remain, its negatives are stricken off in the pre-owned car segment. And now the SX4, which was already good value for money, is even better value as a used car.

On the Road

The SX4 sports a 1.6-litre petrol engine and the popular 1.3-litre Fiat sourced multijet diesel engine under the hood. The petrol engine got variable valve timing in 2009 that improved throttle responses and made it a smoother car to drive. It dishes out about 105PS and is quite peppy but will shoot up your running costs. So only if you are going to drive your car sparingly, opt for the petrol. The diesel engine is tried and tested and can be a workhorse if that’s what you are looking for. The 90PS unit is adequate on power and is quite efficient. Both engines come mated with 5-speed manual gearboxes. The SX4’s 180mm ground clearance is its best asset. There’s no worry of scrapping your underbelly over large sped humps like other cars with soft suspensions. Talking of dynamics, the ride isn’t exactly supple and the SX4 rolls a bit when chucked into corners.

Moving in

The acres of space in the SX4 is its USP. You sit higher than usual in a sedan and get an excellent view of your surroundings though its large windows and windshields. The interior plastics aren’t that great but the fit and finish is better than most Marutis. Still, being a Maruti, rattles from loosened parts are part of package so make sure the one you pick doesn’t rattle much over bad roads. The 505 litre boot can gobble up the biggest of bags. Since the SX4 comes in only two variants, you will find a lot of top spec variants in the used car market (ZXi/ZDi). These get alloy wheels, climate control, fog lamps, ABS and two airbags.

Efficiency

The SX4 petrol returns an ARAI certified fuel economy figure of 16.5kmpl and the SX4 diesel is rated at 22.8kmpl. Expect closer to 10-11kmpl on the petrol and about 17-18kmpl from the diesel in the real world.

Buying used

There’s nothing majorly wrong about an SX4 that can draw you away from it. In fact, the SX4 is excellent value as a new car and that reflects to the keen pricing you will find at used car dealerships. Think of an SX4 as a sedan that can be bought with a slightly stretched budget instead of the hatchback you are looking for. Since the suspension is on the softer side and the car rolls a fair bit, the suspension and tyres have a shorter life than other sedans in this segment. If a car has crossed 60,000-65,000km, you might require a new front set so check for suspension noises during your test drive. The life of Maruti clutch plates, especially in their petrol cars aren’t known to be too long so check for a hard clutch and slippage. Finally check for electricals and air conditioning, underbody rusting and you are good to go.

Money-wise

A 2011 year model SX4 petrol in top trim will cost you anything between Rs 3.8 lakh and Rs 4.3 lakh. You can knock off between Rs 30,000-Rs 50,000 for a car a year older and so on. The diesels are is demand so prices are a tad higher. A 2011 diesel SX4 will cost you between Rs 6-6.5 lakh. Maruti introduced the diesel only in 2011 so older examples will not be found. Add about Rs 50,000-70,000 for a diesel SX4 that’s a year younger.

Buying a used Hyundai i20

In Brief

The i20 ventured into a space where it challenged sedans with its attractive styling, premium features and choice of variants. The i20 comes with a 1.2-litre petrol mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, a 1.4-litre diesel with a six speed manual transmission, and lastly a 1.4-litre petrol with a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The i20 comes with a long features list that’s seen in a segment above it and to an extent established Hyundai’s name as the manufacturer who will not disappoint with its features.

On the Road

There’s one thing the i20 is good at – being pampering and hassle-free. The petrol i20 dishes out 84PS, the diesel churns 90PS under the hood and the automatic has the highest output of 100PS. Don’t expect a spirited drive though, as the i20 is a sloppy handling car when you are in need of quick maneuvering. Ease of driving in the city is its best trait. Buy a used i20 if you are going to restrict it to city use at most times as the suspension is soft enough to cushion most bad roads and the steering is effortlessly light.

Moving in

The i20 is a large hatchback with plenty of space on the inside. It’s in fact one of the few hatchbacks where you can squeeze in three passengers in the rear with comfortable ease. Front seats are comfortable and offer driver seat height adjustment in the top end variant. It’s the only hatch that offers six airbags in the top spec petrol variant. Climate control, adjustable steering wheel for rake and reach, all-round power windows, leather seats, rear parking sensors and parking camera, alloy wheels, the kit the i20 comes with is seriously impressive.

Efficiency

The petrol manual gets a mileage of 18.5kmpl, the diesel returns 21.9kmpl and the petrol automatic gives 15kmpl. All figures are ARAI certified

Buying used

When you are buying a used car, learn to separate the lemons from the list. These are poorly maintained cars that don’t have proper service history and have been in an accident or two. Once you are past these, start sifting through the good ones. The i20 is a very popular car. Being a Hyundai, the well spread service network will be a good backup once you purchase the car. Spares of the i20 are also readily available.

There are very few things to spot in a used i20. Start off with the clutch and pressure plate on cars that have run in over 50,000km. the i20 has a light clutch action so it will be easy to spot a hard clutch if you find one. These cost a tad above Rs 4,000 to replace. I20s in the late 2000s had a steering yoke issue so beware of these. Since the i20 is setup on the softer side, the suspension tends to crash into large potholes. Lower arm and strut wear as a result can be seen on older models. It can set you back by approximately Rs 3,000 for a pair.

Money-Wise

Hyundai’s don’t depreciate quickly. So a three year old i20 petrol will set you back by Rs 3.8-4.2 lakh, a diesel will cost you Rs 4.5-5 lakh and a automatic will set you back between Rs 4.2-4.7 lakh for a 2011 model. Deduct Rs 40,000 on average for a car a year older. These prices depend on condition of the car and so we have provided you with a range from a average maintained car to a pristine one. Cars with low mileage will cost more and logically, cars with more kilometers on the clock will be cheaper. The new i20 is just around the corner so expect prices of the used i20 to fall a tad bit once the new car hits the market.

Buying a used Ford Figo

In Brief

The Ford Figo was launched in 2010 and was responsible to make Ford a prominent force in the Indian car market. The hatchback feels like a big car with plenty of space for occupants and storage and has excellent ride and handling characteristics. The Figo comes with a choice of petrol and a diesel engine, is solidly built and has a good amount of kit on offer on the top-end variants. The Figo may not be a very attractive car but comes with tried and tested mechanicals and we value reliability as much as styling in India, especially in the pre-owned car market and so the baby Ford is poised to age well. It was launched at a fairly competitive price as well so pre-owned Figos will not be too expensive to buy.

On the Road

The diesel Figo is the more popular choice for buyers and you will find more of the TDCi variants than the petrol in the used car market. That’s because the diesel is a huge mile muncher for a small car. It packs 69PS of power from the 1.4-litre duratorq motor, which isn’t much and isn’t too fast on the highway but it’s stability and handling help it maintain high speeds once you build momentum. The 1.2-litre petrol has 71PS on tap and lack punch compared to other petrol motors in this segment. Both cars come mated with 5-speed manual gearboxes.

Moving In

The Figo’s interiors are unexciting but neatly laid out. The red inserts and lighting on the instrument cluster do brighten things up but the dark interiors otherwise are quite dull. The flip side is that as a used car, you will spot lesser stains and dirt on the inside, which is a good thing. The plastics are of the hard-wearing variety, also good for a used car. Ford added a few features like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity only recently so you will not find these features on the Figos entering the used car market. What you will get are standard features that ran at the time including ABS, Airbags, a music system with USB and Aux input and front power windows.

Efficiency

The petrol Figo has a ARAI certified efficiency of 15.6kmpl and the diesel returns a much higher 20kmpl. With regards to current new car standards, these aren’t too good.

Buying used

As most pre-owned car trends go, it takes at least three years since the launch of a car to start seeing many examples in the used car market. So effective 2013, the Figo started being seen on sales lists across India and soon there were a few crucial attention areas for the hatchback. First is the underbody – the Figo has a tendency to scrape the underbody due to its weight and low ground clearance so get the underbody checked at a workshop for damaged parts and stay away from them. 2010 and 2011 batches of the Figo were also recalled for power steering and rear suspension related jobs. If you are hearing unusual sounds from the rear suspension, it’s most probably a cracked torsion beam. Check for power steering fluid level in the car since the fluid delivery hose was prone to leakage. Besides these, do the usual checks for air-conditioning, all electrical like power windows and music system and the lights all round the car.

Money-Wise

An almost 4-year old 2010 model Figo diesel in top titanium trim will cost you anything between Rs 3.85 lakh to 4.25 lakh and you can add about Rs 40,000 more for a year younger car. The petrol Figo will cost you between Rs 3.15-3.5 lakh for the titanium trim adding Rs 35,000 approximately for a 2011 car and so on. It indicates a medium level of depreciation and of course depends on the state of upkeep and mileage clocked.
